Stony Brook defeats Coastal Carolina 28-24
CONWAY, S.C. – Dayne Hoffman threw three touchdown passes, including a 61-yarder to Dwayne Eley with 13:40 remaining that held up as the game-winner in Stony Brook’s 28-24 win against Coastal Carolina on Saturday night.
Hoffman completed 14 of 27 passes for 197 yards, and Conte Cuttino rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries for the Seawolves (3-5, 2-1 Big South Conference).
Zach MacDowall completed 22 of 33 passes for 306 yards with two touchdowns, and added 80 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries for the Chanticleers (4-5, 0-3).
Hoffman’s game-winning touchdown to Eley came less than one minute after James Pallassino’s 30-yard field goal put the Chanticleers ahead 24-21 to open the final quarter.
Coastal Carolina had the ball twice within the final six minutes, but turned it over on downs and then fumbled on Stony Brook’s 25 with 1:11 left to play.
Coastal Carolina took a 13-7 lead at halftime after MacDowall’s 1-yard run in the first and 30-yard pass to Marquel Willis in the second.
But Hoffman hit Eley on touchdowns of 9 and 30 yards before the connecting for the game’s final score early in the fourth.
Eley finished with 120 yards and three scores on six receptions.
