Jackson St. beats MVSU on late field goal
JACKSON, Miss. – Eric Perri kicked three field goals, including the game-winner with 46 seconds left, to help Jackson State pull out a 29-27 victory against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
Luther Edwards rushed for 82 yards and two scores on 17 carries, while Trae Rutland passed for 144 yards and ran for another 105 for the Tigers (4-4, 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference).
Paul Roberts completed 32 of 60 passes for 263 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Delta Devils (2-5, 0-3).
Chris Watkins put the Delta Devils ahead 7-0 on his 6-yard run that opened the first quarter.
After Perri’s first field goal of 36 yards, Edwards scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards late in the opening quarter to give the Tigers a 17-10 halftime lead.
Darius Bolela’s 3-yard run extended the lead midway through the third, but Roberts’ 13-yard scoring pass to Brandon Stargell cut the Tigers’ lead to 23-17 going into the final quarter.
Perri’s 49-yard field goal made the Jackson State lead 26-17 at the start of the fourth, but Zack Gilarski’s 20-yard field goal and a 5-yard touchdown connection between Roberts and Abner Brown put Mississippi Valley State ahead 27-26 with 5:33 to go.
But the Tigers took over on the ensuing possession, driving 54 yards to set up Perri’s 32-yard game winner.
