CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP)—On his first snap of the game, Southeast Missouri freshman quarterback Matt Scheible ran 5 yards for the winning touchdown in a 27-20 overtime win against Tennessee State.

Scheible had not seen any action until 3rd and goal during the first overtime drive for the Redhawks (3-5, 1-3 Ohio Valley) when he made the winning score.

Tennessee State (6-2, 3-1) still had an opportunity to tie the game on the next drive, but a 4th down pass failed.

Houston Lillard, Southeast Missouri’s starting quarterback, completed 15 of 29 passes for 236 yards and two touchdowns. Walter Peoples caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, and Chante Ahamefule caught four passes for 85 yards for the Redhawks. Timmy Holloman had 53 yards rushing and 41 yards receiving.

Javarr Williams rushed 30 times for 134 yards and a touchdown for Tennessee State. Tigers quarterback Antonio Heffner completed 14 of 22 passes for 233 yards but was intercepted three times.

Tennessee State took a 17-3 halftime lead with a field goal from Eric Benson, a 6-yard touchdown run from Williams, and a 4-yard touchdown run from Dante Thomas. Southeast Missouri’s Doug Spada was responsible for the lone first-half score for the Redhawks, kicking a 26-yard field goal.

Lillard threw an 8-yard pass to Peoples and a 34-yard pass to Holloman for touchdowns to tie game at 17-17 with 4:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Benson kicked an 18-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the fourth to give Tennessee State a 20-17 lead, and Southeast Missouri tied the score on a Spada 37-yard field goal with no time remaining in regulation.
