Pierre helps carry Florida Atlantic to 24-20 win
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP)—Charles Pierre rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 24-20 victory over Western Kentucky on Saturday night.
Pierre averaged 8 yards a carry on his 24 attempts and scored on a school-record 74-yard touchdown run to cut Western Kentucky’s lead to 17-14 with 6:38 left in the second quarter. Pierre also scored on an 8-yard run early in the second quarter.
The Owls (2-5) racked up 399 yards of offense, 225 yards coming on the ground. The Hilltoppers (2-6) totaled 317, with 240 on the ground.
The teams combined for 35 points in the second quarter, with Florida Atlantic taking a 21-17 lead into halftime.
Tanner Stewart’s 22-yard field goal cut the lead to 21-20 with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter, but Warley Leroy kicked a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give Florida Atlantic a 24-20 lead with 11:12 remaining.
Tyrell Hayden paced Western Kentucky with 84 yards on 10 carries, including a 64-yard touchdown run.
Rusty Smith went 15-for-23 for 174 yards and a touchdown for Florida Atlantic.
David Wolke and Dexter Taylor combined to go 9-for-17 for 77 yards and an interception for Western Kentucky.
