Brunner outduels Hiller as Central downs Western
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (AP)—Brian Brunner passed for 346 yards and a touchdown and Bryan Schroeder ran for 106 yards and two scores in Central Michigan’s 38-28 win over Western Michigan on Saturday.
Brunner outdueled Broncos quarterback Tim Hiller, who set a school record and a Kelly/Shorts Stadium record with 471 yards passing. Hiller was 38-for-53 with two touchdowns.
Central Michigan (5-2, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) and Western Michigan (6-2, 4-1) combined for 1,044 yards of offense.
Brunner started in place of 2007 MAC Player of the Year Dan LeFevour, who was a late scratch because of an ankle injury suffered last weekend against Temple. Brunner came on in the second quarter of that game and led the Chippewas to a 24-14 victory.
Central went ahead to stay, 28-21, on receiver Antonio Brown’s 2-yard TD pass to tight end Rocky Weaver with 6:29 left in the third quarter.
Brandon West carried 18 times for 53 yards and two touchdowns for Western, while Brown finished with 10 catches for 113 yards.
Central’s Jamarko Simmons had 13 catches for 118 yards, Juan Nunez had 10 catches for 145 yards and a TD and Schneider Julien finished with seven receptions for 128 yards and a score.
