Liberty defeats Coastal Carolina 43-38
CONWAY, S.C. (AP)—Brock Smith threw three touchdown passes to help lead Liberty to a 43-38 win against Coastal Carolina on Saturday night.
Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 239 yards for the Flames (5-0, 1-0 Big South Conference). Rashad Jennings also rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries, and added three catches for 33 yards and two scores in the win.
Zach MacDowall completed 24 of 44 passes for 382 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Chanticleers (3-3, 0-1).
The Chanticleers outgained the Flames 534-531.
After Smith and Jennings hooked up for a 23-yard score, Matt Bevins put the Flames ahead 10-0 with a 22-yard field goal with 6:37 to go in the opening quarter. Coastal Carolina’s Jamie Childers ran it in from 1 yard out to cut the lead to 10-7 at the end of the first.
Jamie Fordham’s 15-yard touchdown run put the Chanticleers up 14-10 to start the second, but Smith threw his next two touchdown passes of 4 and 23 yards to give Liberty a 24-14 halftime lead.
After trading field goals to start the third, Liberty’s B.J. Hayes scored on a 66-yard run.
MacDowall’s 6-yard run cut the lead to 34-24 after three quarters.
But Jennings’ 35-yard touchdown run and Bevins’ 34-yard field goal capped the scoring for the Flames midway through the fourth.
MacDowall’s two late touchdown passes weren’t enough for the Chanticleers.
