McCarty’s 237 yards leads Albany past Duquesne
PITTSBURGH (AP)—David McCarty ran for 237 yards and quarterback Vinny Esposito threw for three scores and ran for another as Albany beat Duquesne 33-23 on Saturday.
Albany (2-3, 1-0 Northeast Conference) took control of a seesaw game with two short scoring drives in the fourth quarter, both after turnovers by Duquesne (2-2, 1-1).
Albany led 20-17 at the half and after a scoreless third quarter clung to a slim lead until L.B. McClosky picked off a pass by Duquesne’s Connor Dixon and returned it to the Duquesne 40. Nine plays later, Esposito threw 5 yards to Tim Bush to stretch the lead to 26-17.
Duquesne’s Michael Rasky fumbled on the next play from scrimmage and Albany recovered at the Duquesne 31. Eight plays later, Esposito threw 2 yards to Justin Petersen to make it 33-17. Duquesne scored late on a 41-yard pass from Dixon to Sean Bunevich for the final margin.
Esposito threw for just 69 yards, completing 10 of 18 passes. His other touchdown pass was a 24-yarder to McCarty and Esposito also ran 2 yards for a score.
Dixon completed 21 of 46 passes for 338 yards, but also threw three interceptions. His other touchdown pass went to Conrad Carter.
Duquesne also fumbled five times, losing two. Esposito avoided interceptions, but Albany also lost the ball twice on fumbles.
