Liberty slips past W. Carolina 19-16
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP)—Brock Smith accounted for 181 total yards and a touchdown to lead Liberty to a 19-16 victory against Western Carolina on Saturday night.
Smith completed 16 of 26 passes for 154 yards and rushed for a score for the Flames (3-0). Liberty’s Rashad Jennings also added 116 yards rushing on 28 carries.
Andy Horn threw for 228 yards for the Catamounts (1-2).
The Flames outgained Western Carolina 338-247 in the game. The Liberty defense held the Catamounts to 19 yards rushing and had two fumble recoveries to help seal the victory.
Liberty took the lead early on a Ben Shipps 29-yard field goal only to give it up when Western Carolina’s Quan Warley scored on a 15-yard run at the close of the first quarter. But after trailing 7-6 at halftime, the Flames scored 16 unanswered points.
The scoring charge began with Dominic Bolden’s 3-yard touchdown run, followed by Smith’s 2-yard scoring run that ended the third frame at 19-7.
Horn threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Marquel Pittman and a Blake Bostic 38-yard field goal in the fourth, but the Catamounts pulled no closer.
