Heffner leads Tennessee St. past Jackson St. 41-18
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—Antonio Heffner ran for one touchdown and threw for another, and Tennessee State returned two of three interceptions for touchdowns in a 41-18 rout of Jackson State on Saturday night.
It is Tennessee State’s sixth consecutive victory over Jackson State (1-2).
Heffner ran for 48 yards, including a 1-yard sneak with 6:36 left in the first half that put the Tigers (3-0) in front for good at 14-10.
Heffner also hit 11-of-16 passes for 137 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the second quarter. His pass was tipped by a defender and was grabbed by Brandon Belvin for a touchdown to make it 28-10 at the half.
Eugene Clifford picked off Jackson State’s Trae Rutland and returned it 43 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.
Rutland was replaced by Michael Mosley, who was picked off by Ty’Ron Johnson. He returned it 39 yards for a score early in the third quarter, making it 38-10.
Javarris Williams scored Tennessee State’s first touchdown on a 28-yard run in the second quarter, and Eric Benson added second-half field goals of 27 and 43 yards.
Erik Pearl’s 30-yard field goal, and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rutland to Carlos Simpson put Jackson State up 10-0 with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
Bloi-Dei Dorzon scored on a 2-yard run early in the fourth quarter.
