Troy defeats North Texas 45-7 despite 7 turnovers
TROY, Ala. (AP)—Omar Haugabook passed for 3 touchdowns, but also threw 4 interceptions, as Troy survived 7 turnovers to defeat North Texas 45-7 Saturday and remain undefeated in Sun Belt Conference play.
The 7 turnovers were the most for Troy (5-2, 4-0 Sun Belt) since the Trojans began playing in Division I-A, now the Bowl Subdivision, in 2001.
But the Troy defense made up for the sloppy offensive play, recording 9 sacks and forcing 2 fumbles and an interception.
Haugabook threw touchdown passes of 22 and 42 yards to Gary Banks in the first quarter and a 46-yard scoring pass to Jerrel Jernigan in the 2nd quarter.
Leodis McKelvin returned a punt 52-yards for another early score as the Trojans took a 28-0 halftime lead.
The Trojans cruised to the easy win in the second half, scoring on an 8-yard pass from Haugabook to Kenny Cattouse, a 38-yard pass from Tanner Jones to Justin Bray and a 24-yard field goal by Gary Whibbs.
The only score for North Texas (1-6, 1-3) came on a 30-yard pass from Giovanni Vizza to Micah Mosley at 2:55 in the third quarter.
