Chappell runs for 138 yards in North Dakota’s 37-10 win over S. Utah
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Ryan Chappell rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns to lead North Dakota to a 37-10 win over Southern Utah on Saturday.
Danny Freund completed 20 of 29 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown for the Fighting Sioux (2-0), who are playing their last season in NCAA Division II.
Weston Dressler became North Dakotas all-time leader for receiving yards and touchdowns when he caught Freunds 33-yard touchdown pass two minutes into the game. Dressler finished with five receptions for 79 yards.
Brandon Hellevang kicked three field goals, including a 56-yarder on the last play of the first half that gave the Sioux a 27-0 lead over the Thunderbirds (0-2).
North Dakota gained 326 yards in the first half and finished with 550 yards. The Sioux defense held the Thunderbirds to 73 yards on the ground.
Southern Utah didn’t convert on a third down until late in the third quarter.
Steve Pulver kicked a 48-yard field goal for Southern Utah with 4:34 remaining, and Cody Stones 28-yard pass to Ryan Griffith set up the Thunderbirds only touchdown, a 1-yard run by Jamar Lee with 4 seconds left.
