Lafayette 25, Sacred Heart 14

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP)—Brad Maurer threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score to lead Lafayette to a 25-14 win over Sacred Heart Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.

Maurer, who completed just two passes all day, scored the go-ahead TD on an 11-yard quarterback draw with :07 left in the third quarter. He then connected with a wide-open Shaun Adair for 21-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Jonathan Hurt got Lafayette (1-0) out to a quick start with a pair of 2-yard rushing touchdowns in the first quarter. He was the Leopards’ leading ground-gainer with 141 yards on 27 rushes.

Tyler Arciaga threw for 129 yards and one score for Sacred Heart, which led 14-13 at the half after the Pioneers scored all their points in the second quarter. Arciaga threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Franklin early in the period. Jason Payne capped the scoring for the Pioneers (0-1) with a 41-yard TD run with 5:03 left. Payne finished with a team-high 102 yards on nine rushes.
