Y! Sports investigation | Wetzel: Why the case matters

Austin Receipt

The following receipt was for a nine-day stay by University of North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin in July of 2009. The stay was prior to the start of his junior season, and the receipt was authenticated for Yahoo! Sports by a hotel employee. It was paid on an American Express. Austin’s name is listed above the name of Pro Tect Management, the agency owned by prominent NFL agent Gary Wichard. The bill also lists a Los Angeles address and Marriott Rewards linked to Fadde Mikhail, a marketing agent who also represents two Pro Tect clients – cornerback Antonio Cromartie and running back C.J. Spiller..

Balmer Receipt 1

This bill was accrued during a 35-day stay by Seattle Seahawks defensive end Kentwan Balmer, a current Wichard client who played alongside Austin at North Carolina. Howard Silber, an attorney for both Wichard and Balmer, identified this as the room where Austin stayed when he traveled to work out in California with Balmer in March of 2009. Silber said Balmer paid the charges for this room, which was settled on a Visa.

Balmer Receipt 4

This bill, which was authenticated for Yahoo! Sports by a hotel employee, was for a separate room that overlapped with Balmer’s 35-day stay in 2009. While it was also under Balmer’s name, it was settled with an American Express – the same type of card used to pay for Austin’s bill in July, which was also linked to Pro Tect management and marketing agent Fadde Mikhail. The duration of the stay in this second room – from March 7 to March 14 – overlaps with North Carolina’s spring break in 2009. The dates also line up closely with a Delta flight itinerary belonging to Austin, who took a flight from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles on March 6, 2009. Austin later departed Los Angeles on a Delta flight on March 15. Howard Silber, an attorney for Balmer, said he was not aware this bill existed until being questioned about it by Yahoo! Sports.
