Top motivational locker room speeches
Listening to motivational speeches delivered by some of today's most inspiring athletes, coaches and other professionals can put your team in the right mindset for competing in an upcoming game or tournament. A few motivational words, or even an inspirational quote, can help any athlete or coach overcome some mental hurdles that impact performance on and off the field or court. The right mindset and a brief pep talk can help any player and team succeed at achieving their goals, and also help to improve team morale.
Here are three motivational locker room speeches that high school student athletes and coaches may be inspired by:
Lou Holtz's locker room speech to the Notre Dame football team
Coach Lou Holtz was among the most inspirational coaches for the University of Notre Dame football team and also served as a sportscaster, author and motivational speaker in the United States during his career. He was the only football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games. One of his most inspirational speeches was delivered to the University of Notre Dame football team and included the following quote:
"We're not going out defending anything. We're going out to play for it, to compete for it. Nobody gives you anything in this world. People can give you money, they can give you wealth, they can give you fame. One thing that nobody in this world can give you is respect. The self-respect you have for yourself, the way you play the game and the way you believe…the way you do things…this is a game of respect. You are Notre Dame…"
Derrick Moore's pre-game speech for the Georgia Tech football team
In 2007, Georgia Tech Chaplin delivered a highly-charged motivational pep talk to the Georgia Tech football team preparing for a game with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The most motivational part of this speech was a quote from Derrick Moore's school teacher. He encouraged all players to repeat the following: "We're going to fight! Until we can't fight no more. Going to lie down, and bleed awhile. We're going to get up! And fight some more!"
This speech helped the football team to march onto the field with a strong will to win, and the tenacity to stick through the game with a fighter's mentality.
Locker room speech by Herb Brooks before the 1980 America-USSR hockey Olympic game
Herb Brooks delivered a fierce locker room speech to the American Olympics hockey team before the 1980 America-USSR Hockey Olympic semi-finals game in Lake Placid, New York. The most motivational moment of his speech, as delivered by actor Kurt Russel in this clip was summed up in this quote:
"Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here. That's what you earned here tonight…tonight, we shut them down because we can! Tonight, WE are the greatest hockey team. You were born to be hockey players, every one of you. You were meant to be here tonight. This is your time…"
