Former LSU players Terrence Toliver and Josh Jasper sign NFL deals: A fan’s reaction
Now that the NFL lockout has ended, rookie free agent signings are at a fever pitch. Two former LSU Tigers, wide receiver Terrence Toliver and kicker Josh Jasper, have already signed free agent deals.
Toliver, who is from the Houston area, will join the Houston Texans. Jasper has signed on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. To date, former Tiger defensive backs Jai Eugene and Daniel Graff have not been signed. Richard Murphy, a former LSU running back, has agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Even though Toliver had to wait quite a while to find his place in the NFL, he is not upset about not being drafted. "I'm over all of that; I'm not bitter," he said. "I know everything happens for a reason. I'm just happy every thing is settled, and I can get started on my career."
Toliver was LSU's leading receiver last year on a team that was not very good at all at in the passing game. Yet, he still managed 579 yards and five touchdowns on 41 receptions. During his four-year career for the Tigers, Toliver hauled in 126 passes which was good for 1,820 yards and 12 touchdowns.
I don't know if NFL scouts overlooked Toliver's ability because of Jordan Jefferson's struggles at quarterback last season. It's hard for me to believe a guy who scores a touchdown on 10.5 percent of his career catches went undrafted. Toliver's total was better than some of the wide receivers who were drafted, including Alabama's Julio Jones. Jones was the second wide receiver selected. He scored a touchdown on 8.4 percent of his receptions. The Texans could use another guy who is a scoring threat like Toliver if their defense continues to play as badly as they did in 2010. Toliver believes he can make an impact right away. He'll be behind Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, and Jacoby Jones, who just re-signed with the Texans.
Jasper was tied for the SEC lead in points last year with 120. Jasper was the most accurate kicker in LSU history and second most accurate kicker in SEC history. He'll compete with Connor Barth for the kicking job. Barth has made around 80 percent of his field goals in his three years in the NFL.
As an LSU fan, I'm glad to see these former Tigers continue their career on the next level.
