Former LSU star Skyler Green wins Ironman honor in arena debut: A fan’s reaction
Former LSU Tigers standout and 2003 BCS national champion Skyler Green had a huge game in his New Orleans VooDoo debut on June 3.
Green signed with the VooDoo on May 31. The VooDoo lost in Green's first outing to the Jacksonville Sharks 62-55 but would not have even made a game of it without the help of Green. For his efforts, Green was named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Week for Week 13 on June 7.
In his first appearance in front of the home crowd at the New Orleans Arena, Green returned a kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown to go along with eight receptions for 132 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Green made his debut in the second quarter of the game when head coach Derek Stingley put Green in PJ Berry's spot on the kickoff return unit.
Green almost took his first return back for a touchdown. It was his second one that ended up in the end zone. After the game, Green said: "The first kickoff return I kind of hesitated, and on the second one I just said I'm not going to hesitate, I'm just going to take off and go, It opened up, and I just went for the sideline as fast as I could."
Playing on the shorter field and within the confines of the walls surrounding the field will take some getting used to for Green. On his first touchdown catch, he made the reception too close to the wall to stop and rammed into it and fell onto his back in the end zone. Green said: "That wall? Man you have to be prepared for that wall. I got turned over upside down on that wall."
The VooDoo have the week off before returning to action on June 17 against the Georgia Force in Georgia. The VooDoo are 2-10 on the 2011 season and 0-7 at home. Their next home game is June 25 against the Spokane Shock, the defending Arena Bowl champions.
After graduating from LSU, Green was drafted in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He bounced around from the Cowboys to the Cincinnati Bengals to the New Orleans Saints before signing with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2009. He's looking to make the most of his AFL opportunity and is off to a great start.
As an LSU graduate and fan, I have fond memories of Green's days at LSU, especially his touchdown run against Oklahoma in 2003 BCS National Championship.
