Hayes’ 2 TDs help Lamar beat Incarnate Word 45-35

BEAUMONT, Texas (AP)—J.J. Hayes caught two touchdown passes during a wild first quarter and Lamar held off Incarnate Word for a 45-35 victory Saturday.

Hayes caught a 10-yard pass from Andre Bevil and a 7-yarder from Jeremy Johnson during a first quarter that featured five touchdowns as Lamar built a 21-14 lead.

Lamar (2-1) stretched the lead to 42-20 after scoring 21 straight points in the second and third quarters. Two 1-yard fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Paden Lynch brought Incarnate Word within 42-35 before Justin Stout hit a 31-yard field goal with 2:46 remaining to seal it.

Trent Rios had 120 yards rushing and two TDs for Incarnate Word (1-2)—an NCAA Division II school—while Lynch was 21 of 28 passing for 203 yards.

Mike Venson had 90 yards rushing and a TD for Lamar. Bevil was 14 for 19 for 226 yards and two scores, and Hayes finished with 96 yards on four receptions.
