Another day, another hurdle for Seantrel Henderson: ‘Cane behemoth facing preseason surgeryTo the growing list of obstacles standing between Seantrel Henderson and his destiny as Miami's starting left tackle, we have a new entry: The South Florida Sun-Sentinel confirmed today that Henderson, the 6-foot-8, 345-pound colossus who topped recruiting lists in 2010, is scheduled to undergo back surgery on Aug. 8.

The severity of the injury is unknown, as is the approximate recovery time. But the timing of the procedure guarantees Henderson will miss the start of preseason practice, at least, again setting back his efforts to regain the starting job he apparently lost in the spring. After starting ten games and picking up a handful of Freshman All-America notices last year at right tackle, Henderson was expected to make the inevitable move to the left side as a sophomore, in preparation for his ascension to the NFL Draft in two years.

Instead, the new coaching staff dropped him to second string on the initial spring depth chart — an order reportedly based on performance in the offseason conditioning program — and still had him listed as the No. 2 left tackle at the end of the spring, behind redshirt freshman Malcolm Bunche. Now, it could be weeks or months before Henderson is even able to resume the competition.

At that point, he may or may not have to deal with another setback, a reported suspension for the 'Canes' season opener at Maryland on Sept. 5. Coach Al Golden refused to confirm or deny the suspension when it was first reported in March, and Henderson's father denied it outright, along with simmering rumors that Seantrel was contemplating a transfer home to Minnesota. At any rate, the odds that he'll be suited up, on the field and making progress toward his eventual multimillion-dollar payday at the start of the season — or at any point shortly thereafter — are growing longer with every new headline.
