Recently deposed coaches handle their public exits in all kinds of fashions -- some let it out with unvarnished tears, some go through the motions with a shellshocked fatalism, or seethe with palpable frustration just beneath a curt exterior. Just hours after getting the ax this morning, now-ex Memphis head coach Tommy West went his own way: Unloading on the school and the local press with both barrels.
OK, so Howard Beale, Tommy West is not. But if you don't think a hundred failed mid-major coaches wouldn't have followed him to the windows of athletic departments across the country and stick their heads out and yell, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" maybe you haven't been around enough underprivileged, overmatched operations in your time. Whoever follows West at Memphis has a tough job ahead, but first, he's got to get mad.
