ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Joab Jerome scored 20 points - on 7 of 9 shooting - to pace Winthrop over Appalachian State 80-72 on Sunday.
Keon Johnson added 15 points for the Eagles (6-2), while Keon Moore chipped in with 11.
Appalachian State (2-7) was led by Tab Hamilton's 20 points. Chris Burgess added 15 points and five assists, while Tevin Baskin chipped in with 12 points.
The game was won on the free throw line, as Winthrop went to the line 17 more times than the Mountaineers and made 10 more.
Winthrop used a 13-2 run early in the first half en route to a five point lead at intermission.
Appalachian State cut the lead to one with 5:18 left after a pair of Burgess free throws, but Moore hit a jumper and was fouled by Hamilton. He made the free throw and it never got that close again down the stretch.
