Smith leads Lipscomb past Florida Gulf Coast 84-74Saturday, Feb 16, 2013
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Martin Smith had career highs with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Stephen Hurt added 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lipscomb to an 84-74 upset of Florida Gulf Coast in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Saturday night.
Florida Gulf Coast (19-9, 11-4) had won seven consecutive games. The Eagles’ most recent loss was 87-78 to Lipscomb in overtime on Jan. 17.
Deonte Alexander added 14 points for the Bisons (10-15, 5-9), who had lost four of five coming in.
Bernard Thompson scored 23 points, Sherwood Brown had 17 with nine rebounds, Chase Fieler scored 12 and Brett Comer had 12 assists with eight points for the Eagles.
Trailing 34-30 at halftime, Lipscomb tied at 44-44 on Alexander’s layup 4:33 in and finally took the lead for good at 63-61 on Hurt’s jumper with 5:33 remaining. Hurt hit another jumper to make it 75-67 with 1:18 left.
