CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Tashan Newsome scored 22 points, including a three-point play with 29.5 seconds left in overtime for the winning margin, as Gardner-Webb defeated Big South Conference leader Charleston Southern 74-73 Wednesday night.
Mathiang Muo, whose 3-pointer for Charleston Southern with 3.2 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, missed a jumper with 11 seconds left in the extra period, then missed again just before the buzzer after two deflections by the Gardner-Webb defense.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs (12-10, 4-4) ended an eight-game winning streak by the Buccaneers (12-7, 7-1) and have won back-to-back Big South road games for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Newsome also had 10 rebounds for Gardner-Webb, while Jarvis Davis added 14 points and Tyler Strange 13.
Saah Nimley had 27 points, including 5 of 10 3-pointers, and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Charleston Southern. Muo had 14 points, including eight in the final 1:02 of regulation.
