NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP)—Taylor Smith scored 16 points and blocked five shots, and Darius Gardner had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 69-62 victory against High Point on Saturday.
Smith went 8 for 8 from the floor, and Desmond Haymon and Antonio Bostic added 11 points each for the Lumberjacks (15-11) in a BracketBusters game.
Nick Barbour scored 23 points and Shay Shine 21 for the Panthers (11-17).
Barbour’s 3-pointer with 2:17 remaining got High Point within 63-62, but those were its last points. Bostic hit a jumper with 1:46 to play, and Stephen F. Austin added four free throws in the final 39 seconds.
The Panthers missed their last five attempts from the floor and shot 36.5 percent (19 of 52) overall.
The Lumberjacks had a modest 35-31 rebounding edge but outscored High Point 30-2 in the paint.
