WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)—Robbie Hummel had 13 points and eight rebounds to help Purdue beat Eastern Michigan 61-36 on Saturday.

Terone Johnson scored nine points, Ryne Smith had eight points and five rebounds and Anthony Johnson scored all seven of his points in the second half for Purdue (9-2), which was coming off a lackluster 65-60 win over Western Carolina.

Purdue pulled away despite shooting 36 percent from the field. The Boilermakers held the Eagles to 14 points and 5-for-23 shooting after the break.

Derek Thompson scored 15 points and Jamell Harris added eight points, eight rebounds and four blocks for Eastern Michigan (4-6), which lost its fifth straight. Darrell Lampley, who entered the game averaging 17 points per contest, finished with five points on 2-for-7 shooting.

Eastern Michigan’s other games against teams from the big conferences have been rough, too. The Eagles lost 72-40 to Michigan State and 84-48 to Syracuse.

Purdue led 29-22 at halftime, despite its offense being stagnant. The Boilermakers missed 6 of 10 free throws before the break, but committed just three turnovers and forced the Eagles into 10. Hummel had eight points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

Smith opened the second half with a 3-pointer. He made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 35-23. A towering one-handed putback dunk by Anthony Johnson got the crowd involved.

Purdue held the Eagles without a field goal for nearly nine minutes to start the second half, and the Boilermakers cruised from there.

Purdue plays in-state rival Butler on Saturday in the Crossroads Classic.
