VCU beats George Washington 75-60By DAVID GINSBURG, AP Sports Writer Sunday, Dec 4, 2011
The Rams (5-3) let a 19-point lead dwindle to 62-56 with five minutes left before Darius Theus made a 3-pointer and a three-point play to put VCU up 68-58 with 3:56 to go.
Rob Brandenberg had 12 points, and Theus and Briante Weber added 10 apiece for VCU, which made nine of its season-high 12 3-pointers in the first half.
It was the fourth win in five games for the Rams, who reached the Final Four last season.
Nemanja Mikic led George Washington (4-3) with 15 points and Tony Taylor had 14. The Colonials outscored VCU 34-32 after halftime, but that wasn’t enough to make up for a first half in which they missed 16 of 27 shots and committed 10 turnovers.
VCU used a 13-2 run in the first half to pull out of a tie and take the lead for good. Troy Daniels sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around two foul shots by Burgess to make it 24-16, and after David Pellom scored for George Washington, Daniels connected again from long range before D.J. Haley made a layup for a 29-18 advantage.
Late in the half, a basket by Weber and successive 3-pointers by Brandenberg put the Rams up by 19.
VCU went 9 for 15 from beyond the arc in the first half.
