UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP)—Julian Boyd notched a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Long Island University to an 80-75 win over Vermont Sunday in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off’s Springfield subregional bracket.
Jamal Olasewere also scored 18 points, while Jason Brickman and Michael Culpo added 10 points apiece for the Blackbirds (2-3) in their second consecutive win.
The teams traded leads in the opening half, and Four McGlynn put the Catamounts (2-2) ahead 27-24 with 5:46 left before the break. But Olasewere completed a three-point play after he was fouled laying the ball in, which gave LIU the lead and helped spark a 15-6 run for a six-point halftime advantage.
Vermont tied it three more times in the second half, but Julian Boyd followed two free throws with a layup to put LIU up for good at 64-60.
Brian Voelkel led Vermont with 13 points.
