JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Mason Leggett scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures as Jacksonville State defeated Miles 87-64 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
Tarvin Gaines added 15 points while Rinaldo Mafra and Brian Williams each had 10.
Jacksonville State broke open a close game in the first half with a 19-4 run for a 41-23 lead, capped by a layup by Dion Waiters with 6 minutes remaining in the half. The lead grew to 21 points before Miles trimmed the deficit to 54-39 at halftime.
Miles trailed 76-63 with 7:27 left to play in the game before the Gamecocks scored seven straight points to put the game away.
The Gamecocks’ inside game made the difference as Miles was outscored 42-10 in the paint, including 22-2 in the second half.
Eric Lipkin led Miles with 23 points on 5 of 10 shooting from 3-point range.
