Nyakundi, SMU defeat Southeast Missouri 71-59

DALLAS (AP)—Robert Nyakundi’s double-double propelled SMU to a 71-59 victory over Southeast Missouri on Wednesday night.

Nyakundi had game highs of 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Mustangs (8-4), who have won four straight and seven of their last eight games. Justin Haynes added 17 points.

Marland Smith scored 20 points to pace the Redhawks (3-11), whose three-game winning streak was snapped. Anthony Allison contributed 15.

Nyakundi’s 3-pointer with 9:25 left in the first half broke a 14-14 tie and gave the Mustangs a lead they did not relinquish, and they led 37-26 at the break. SMU held a huge first-half shooting edge of 50 percent (12 of 24 to 33.3 percent (9 of 27).

The Mustangs cooled down in the second half and finished at 44.4 percent (20 of 45) to 35.8 percent (19 of 53) for the Redhawks.

SMU has won six straight at home.
