Southern Miss beats South Florida 60-53
TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Gary Flowers scored 15 points and R.L. Horton added 14 to lead Southern Miss past South Florida 60-53 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles capped the victory with a 16-1 run, rallying from a 52-44 deficit. D.J. Newbill, who finished with nine points, put them ahead for good at 55-53 with less than a minute remaining.
Southern Miss built a 10-point advantage midway through the first half on the strength of a 12-2 run and led 32-28 at the break.
Sophomore transfer guard Jawanze Poland led South Florida with 12 points. Jarrid Famous added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Augustus Gilcrist had 10 rebounds and eight points for the Bulls.
