Portland State holds off Willamette 97-90
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Melvin Jones scored 27 points and Portland State held off Willamette 97-90 on Tuesday night in a game that was delayed more than five hours by heavy snow.
Dominic Waters added 18 points and Julius Thomas had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings (6-7), who broke open a close game with an 18-5 run. Portland State led 40-26 after Jamie Jones scored on a hook shot with 6:33 left in the first half.
The lead swelled to 17 in the second half before the Bearcats (3-6) closed the gap.
Cameron Mitchell scored 28 points and Taylor Mounts had 13 for Willamette, a Division III school located in Salem, about 30 miles south of Portland.
Because of the snowstorm, Portland State officials pushed back the tip-off until after the Portland State-Oregon State women’s game, which started 90 minutes late.
