N.C. Central 63, Winston-Salem 56
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Bryan Ayala scored 19 points to lead North Carolina Central past Winston-Salem State 63-56 on Saturday in a bonus game at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
Nick Chasten added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Vincent Davis finished with 10 points for the Eagles (4-27). They overcame a 32 percent shooting performance by forcing 24 turnovers and turning them into 22 points.
Jamal Durham and Paul Davis scored 14 points apiece for the Rams (8-22), who finished the season with four straight losses.
The cross-state rivals and fledgling Division I programs met as part of the MEAC tournament for the second straight year. Winston-Salem State joined the league in 2007 but isn’t eligible to compete for the league title until 2011.
N.C. Central was a founding member of the MEAC in 1969, left in 1979 to join Division II and has petitioned for readmission.
