Prairie View beats MVSU 65-60
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Three Prairie View A&M players scored 13 points apiece, and the Panthers hit six free throws in the final 36 seconds to seal a 65-60 win over Mississippi Valley State on Thursday in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Christopher Jones, Darnell Hugee and Tim Meadows scored 13 each for the third-seeded Panthers (17-15), who advanced to play No. 2 seed Jackson State on Friday in the semifinals.
Eric Petty paced the sixth-seeded Delta Devils (7-25) with 18 points, while Dwayne Harmason added 15.
The Panthers led by eight points at halftime, and by as many as 10 with 7:47 to play, before the Delta Devils’ 10-3 run pulled them within 58-55 with just under three minutes left.
But the Panthers, who went scoreless from the floor in the game’s final 4:10, hit seven free throws from that point to seal the victory.
