Winthrop tops Coastal Carolina 70-50
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Mantoris Robinson scored 15 points to lead Winthrop to a 70-50 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Eagles (11-18, 9-9 Big South Conference), who have won five straight following a five-game losing streak, avenged a 78-69 loss to the Chanticleers on Jan. 24.
Coastal Carolina (11-19, 5-13) jumped out to a 19-6 lead, but Winthrop used a 22-8 run to lead 28-27 at halftime.
In the second half, the Chanticleers shot 24.1 percent from the field (7 of 29), compared to 41.7 percent shooting (10 of 24) by the Eagles, who also hit 20 of 24 free throws.
Joseph Harris had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Mario Edwards added 11 points for Coastal Carolina, which has lost four straight. Harris is 17 boards away from the school’s single-season rebounding record of 356 set by Forrest Junck in 1978-79.
