American holds off Navy 64-59
WASHINGTON (AP)—Garrison Carr scored 20 points and hit four free throws in the last 28 seconds to help American hold off Navy 64-59, clinching the Eagles’ second straight Patriot League regular season title and home-court advantage throughout the tournament.
American (20-7, 12-1) defeated Navy 68-67 on Jan. 28 to begin its current nine-game winning streak. The Eagles have also won 15 of their last 16 and 14 straight Patriot League home games.
American led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Midshipmen (18-10, 7-6) pulled ahead 49-48 on a Kaleo Kina jumper with 7:23 left. The lead changed hands seven more times before Carr hit two free throws for a 60-59 lead with 28 seconds left.
Carr added two foul shots with 19 seconds remaining, then Frank Borden’s two free throws sealed the win.
Kina and Adam Teague led Navy with 19 points apiece.
