Mercer beats Belmont 89-83

MACON, Ga. (AP)—James Florence scored 30 points and Daniel Emerson recorded a double-double to lead Mercer in an 89-83 win over Belmont on Sunday.

Emerson scored 16 points and grabbed 10 boards for the Bears (17-12, 11-7 Atlantic Sun Conference), who have won six of their last seven games. E.J. Kusnyer also added 14 points and Brian Mills chipped in 10.

Alex Renfroe led the Bruins (17-10, 13-5) with 23 points, Shane Dansby added 20 and Andy Wicke had 17. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Belmont.

The teams stayed close throughout the game, but Belmont took a 75-71 lead on a pair of foul shots by Renfroe with just over three minutes to play. But Kusnyer’s 3-pointer on Mercer’s next possession sparked a 12-1 run during the next 2:21 to seal the win for the Bears.

Mercer hit 27 free throws in the contest compared to 10 for Belmont.
