Winthrop beats Gardner-Webb 60-55
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP)—Justin Burton scored four of his 16 points in the last 17 seconds as Winthrop held off Gardner-Webb 60-55 on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (8-18, 7-9 Big South Conference) won their second straight game while sending the Runnin’ Bulldogs to their fourth loss in a row.
Winthrop led 29-19 at halftime, holding Gardner Webb (11-15, 7-9) to just eight field goals while swatting away eight.
Trailing 37-28 with 13:53 left in the second half, the Runnin’ Bulldogs used a 17-3 run to lead 45-40 with 5:35 remaining.
Winthrop regained the lead at 48-46 and never trailed again, though Gardner-Webb pulled within 56-55 with 19 seconds left on a Grayson Flittner 3-pointer.
Burton hit two free throws with 17 seconds left and a layup at 3 seconds to seal the win.
Joshua Henley and Auryn MacMillan led Gardner-Webb with 13 points apiece.
