N. Carolina A&T beats Hampton 56-55

HAMPTON, Va. (AP)—Tavarus Alston scored 21 points, including a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left to push North Carolina A&T to a 56-55 win over Hampton on Monday night.

Vincetn Simpson scored nine of his team-leading 19 points in a seven-minute span in the second half, putting Hampton ahead 54-49 with just over two minutes left. But the Aggies (9-13, 3-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) hit four late free throws, including a pair by Alston, to pull within 54-53 with 21 seconds left.

Brandon Tunnell was then fouled and hit one of two free throws to put the Pirates (10-11, 4-4) ahead by two, setting up Alston’s decisive 3-pointer. Kwame Morgan missed at the buzzer for Hampton, who blew a nine-point halftime lead in defeat.

Ed Jones scored 11 points for the Aggies, and Alston hit five 3-pointers.

The Pirates hit just four shots from the field in the second half.
