Southern defeats Alcorn State 86-83 in overtime
LORMAN, Miss. (AP)—Earnest Jones scored five of his 17 points in overtime and Southern University defeated Alcorn State 86-83 on Saturday night.
Jones had one of two Jaguars’ offensive rebounds in the overtime period. Southern (4-17, 4-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored five second chance points in the extra period.
The Jaguars had 13 second chance points in the game and outrebounded Alcorn State 41-27. Steffon Wiley and Douglas Scott had 10 rebounds each for the Jaguars. Chris Davis scored 19 points for Southern (4-18, 2-7), Wiley added 15 and Barry Honore’ scored 13.
Wiley hit two free throws with 8 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. With the score tied at 72-72 with 29 seconds to go, Troy Jackson hit two free throws to give Alcorn State a 74-72 advantage with 16 seconds left.
Jackson led the Braves with 17 points.
