Northeastern holds off Va. Commonwealth 68-63
RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Eugene Spates and Manny Adako scored 12 points each and Northeastern nearly blew a 16-point second-half lead but held on with clutch free-throw shooting to beat Virginia Commonwealth 68-63 on Tuesday night.
The Huskies (14-6, 9-1 Colonial Athletic Association) took over sole possession of first place in the league and claimed the only meeting of the season between the schools, giving them the critical head-to-head tiebreaker.
Eric Maynor scored 30 points and Brandon Rozzell had a career-high 16 for the Rams (15-6, 8-2), who trailed most of the way but got within two points three times in the final 1:56.
The Huskies held on by making 7 of 8 free throws in the final 2 minutes.
Matt Janning added 11 points for the Huskies as they ended VCU’s seven-game winning streak. The loss was their second at home in the past three seasons in conference play.
