Southern holds off Miss. Valley State 57-54
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Chris Davis and Barry Honore’ scored 14 points apiece and Southern University hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Mississippi Valley State 57-54.
The Jaguars (3-15, 3-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) made 6 of 10 free throws in the final 44 seconds to seal the win.
Southern, which led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 31-21 at the break, held a 56-51 advantage with 23 seconds left after two Steffon Wiley free throws.
Julius Cheeks hit a 3-pointer to pull MVSU within 56-54 with 17 seconds remaining. After Honore’ made the front end of a one-and-one, Cheeks missed a 3-point attempt with 9 seconds on the clock.
The Delta Devils (1-17, 1-4) have lost three straight since winning their first game of the sesaon on Jan. 10 against Alabama A&M, 68-62.
Dwayne Harmason led MVSU with 16 points and Eric Petty had 13.
