Samford beats Appalachian State 68-56
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Trey Montgomery scored 25 points to lead Samford to a 68-56 victory over Appalachian State on Saturday in the first meeting ever between the two schools.
The Bulldogs (8-8, 3-4 Southern Conference), who trailed 25-23 at halftime, handed the Mountaineers (6-9, 3-4) their fourth straight loss.
Montgomery shot 9-for-13 from the floor and Samford hit 46.8 percent of its field goals (22 of 47) compared to 46 percent for Appalachian State (23 of 50). The Bulldogs made the difference at the free-throw line, going 15-for-18, including 14-for-16 in the second half, while the Mountaineers hit only 5 of 8 free throws for the game.
Appalachian State held the rebounding edge, 32-23.
Josh Davis added 11 points for the Bulldogs and Andy King had 10.
Donald Sims led the Mountaineers with 14 points and Donterious Hughes scored 10.
