Irvine overcomes late slump to beat Pacific 52-51
IRVINE, Calif. (AP)—Eric Wise scored 12 points and hit a free throw with 15.7 seconds left to lead UC Irvine over Pacific 52-51 Thursday.
Irvine (5-11, 3-1 Big West) squandered a 15-point halftime lead, scoring only four points from the field in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Pacific (9-6, 2-2) went on a 21-5 during that stretch to take a 36-35 lead on Bryan LeDuc’s 3-pointer.
Michael Hunter helped the Anteaters recover with five points in a five-minute stretch as the Anteaters led 47-41 with 3:49 left.
Pacific rallied to tie the game on a scoop shot by James Doran with 47.9 seconds left. Wise was fouled on the ensuing possession and made the first of two free throws for the 52-51 lead.
The Tigers had a throw-in with 0.2 seconds left, but the pass wasn’t cleanly handled and time expired.
LeDuc scored 20 points with eight rebounds to lead the Tigers.
Hunter added 10 points for Irvine.
