Ball State rallies past N. Illinois
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP)—Ball State rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Northern Illinois 60-54 Tuesday night in its first game without its injured top scorer.
Anthony Newell is out for the season after breaking his right leg Saturday at Eastern Michigan. The senior had averaged 15.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
Ball State compensated with balance. Rob Giles and Jarrod Jones each scored 11 points for the Cardinals (7-7, 2-0 Mid-American Conference).
Bryan Hall had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Mike Dinunno scored 13 points for the Huskies (5-9, 1-1).
Northern Illinois led 34-27 at halftime, but Ball State opened the second half on a 12-5 run to tie the score at 39.
The Huskies regained the advantage, but Ball State took the lead for good on a layup by Laron Frazier that made the score 51-50 with 3:34 to play.
