Culpepper scores 28 to help UTEP down SMU

DALLAS (AP)—Randy Culpepper scored 28 points and Stefon Jackson added 22 to lead Texas-El Paso to a 74-68 win over SMU on Saturday night.

Culpepper hit six 3-pointers for UTEP (10-5, 1-0 Conference USA), which has won five of six and handed SMU a loss in its conference opener for the fourth straight season.

Mouhammad Faye scored 19 points for the Mustangs (5-8, 0-1), including a 3-pointer with 2:57 left that cut the deficit to four. SMU got within 64-61 on a Faye free throw before the Miners pulled away.

Culpepper, Jackson and Kareem Cooper, who had 10 points, accounted for more than 80 percent of the Miners’ scoring.
