Prairie View A&M beats Southern 72-58
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Michael Griffin scored 20 points to lead Prairie View to a 72-58 win over Southern University on Monday night.
Griffin shot 8-for-17 from the field and added three steals for the Panthers (6-9, 2-0 Southwest Athletic Conference). Dorian McDaniel chipped in with 13 points.
The Jaguars (1-13, 1-1) were led by Barry Honore’, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Earnest Jones scored 10, while Chris Davis added eight points and six assists.
The Panthers held a 33-22 lead at halftime. Southern chipped away at the lead, cutting the deficit to 35-31 with 15:58 remaining. But the Panthers went on an 18-8 run over the next nine minutes of play to take a 53-39 lead with 6:51 left.
Prairie View A&M shot 47.2 percent from the field (25-for-53). The Panthers’ bench outscored Southern’s 43-18.
