Iona beats Fairfield 64-60
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP)—Scott Machado scored 14 points and Gary Springer had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Iona to its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season, 64-60 over Fairfield on Sunday.
Jonathan Huffman added 10 points and Trinity Fields had eight for the Gaels (6-9, 1-3), who outrebounded the Stags 40-31.
Greg Nero scored 18 points and Jonathan Han had 13 for Fairfield (8-6, 2-2), which has lost three straight.
The Gaels shot 41.9 percent from the field and held the Stags to 28.6 percent in taking a 30-22 halftime lead.
Iona, which never trailed in the second half, led by as much as 56-43 after Jermel Jenkins converted two free throws with 4:43 left.
Fairfield got within 62-60 when Nero scored with 9.3 seconds remaining.
Machado made two free throws with 7.7 seconds left.
