Akron defeats St. Francis, NY, 77-70
AKRON, Ohio (AP)—Jimmy Conyers scored 17 points and Akron hit 26 free throws, helping the Zips overcome being outscored from the field by St. Francis, N.Y. for a 77-70 victory on Sunday at Rhodes Arena.
St. Francis (3-8) connected on 27 field goals and 10 3-pointers compared to Akron’s 22 field goals and seven 3-pointers. But Akron took 34 free throws to overcome the shooting deficit.
Ricky Cadell led St. Francis with 17 points and Nigel Byam and Herman Brice had seven rebounds apiece, but that wasn’t enough to save the Terriers.
Brett McKnight came off the bench to score 13 points while Steve McNees had 12 points for Akron.
Akron led by as many as 13 points during the first period and held onto a slim 43-41 lead at the half. St. Francis briefly retook the lead 47-45 with 16:19 left, but the Zips surged ahead on a 3-pointer by Anthony Hitchens with 14:03 left.
