Winston-Salem knocks off Averett 68-53

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP)—Diontae Gibson scored 15 points to lead Winston-Salem State to a 68-53 victory over Averett on Saturday.

Brian Fisher added 14 points for the Rams (3-7), who played their home-opener after starting the season with nine consecutive road games.

Winston-Salem led 54-49 when Jamal Durham converted a three-point play with 4:15 remaining. Gibson made a free throw and Isiah Tucker hit a layup to increase the lead to 60-49 with 1:54 left in the game.

The Rams made eight consecutive free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Durham added 13 points and Tucker finished with 11 points.

Ryan Frazier led Averett (6-4) with 16 points and Damien Brown added 10 points.
