Wichita State wins 58-53 over Northern Arizona
WICHITA, Kan. (AP)—A.J. Hawkins scored 15 points to lead Wichita State past Northern Arizona 58-53 on Saturday night.
Wichita State (5-5) led by just two points at the half, but Hawkins and Clevin Hannah combined to score 25 points in the second half to push the Shockers to victory.
Northern Arizona (3-7) was led by Matt Johnson’s 13 points.
Wichita State led by as many as nine points three times in the second half, including a 54-45 lead late. But the Lumberjacks answered yet again as Josh Wilson hit two 3-pointers—his only points of the game—to cut the Shockers’ lead to 54-53 with 34.2 seconds remaining.
Hawkins was then intentionally fouled, and he and Hannah sealed the outcome at the free-throw line.
The Shockers led 10-2 at one point in the first half, but still couldn’t manage to take over the game. They went scoreless for more than six minutes as the Lumberjacks went on a 10-0 run.
