New Mexico State beats Sacramento State 76-65
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Jonathan Gibson hit every shot he attempted in the first half as he led New Mexico State to a 76-65 win against Sacramento State on Thursday night.
Gibson finished with 16 points as he hit 6 of 8 from the field and went 2-for-3 from 3-point range. Troy Gillenwater led the Aggies (3-4) with 18 points and Wendell McKines finished with 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Aggies remain undefeated at home, while Sacramento State falls to 1-8.
The teams stayed close for much of the first half, until Gibson made four baskets from the field, one from beyond the 3-point arc and a pair of free throws to put the Aggies up 38-25 at the half.
NMSU extended the lead to 42-27 three minutes into the second half with a long jumper by Gibson and a defensive rebound and decisive dunk by McKines. With 15 minutes left, the Aggies had built a 20-point lead.
The Hornets started to chip away. With 1:35 left, Jared Stigall hit a 3-pointer to put the score at 68-60 but the Aggies never surrendered the lead.
Sacramento State was led by Justin Eller, who finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Antonio Flaggs added 16 points and Randy Adams contributed 12 points and six rebounds.
The Aggies out rebounded Sacramento State 49-32 and scored 18 points off second chances compared to the Hornets’ 8.
